7. SLEEPING WATER
4 years and a half from the 1st … Into the avant-garde of melancholic sound, the 2nd album that has exceedingly increased in depth.
The band was formed in 2005 by leading members of the music scene in Osaka. Possessing a powerful yet concurrently lyrical and melodic sound, with ennui female vocals, their melancholic and gothic metal genre bring such bands like SENTENCED, and THE GATHERING into mind.
On April, 2006, the band produced their 1st demo eleanor. In February, 2007, they subsequently made their 2nd demo The Second Dawn, while also contributing tracks for the metal compilation SAMURAI METAL Vol.2, released on October, 2006.
After this, the band released their 1st album a circle of lament on November 11, 2008, from Black-listed Records. The audio mastering was done by reputed Dennis Ward (PINK CREAM 69), also known for his various works which include engineering for the bands ANGRA, ADAGIO, EDNBRIDGE and more.
Following a one year hiatus in 2010, the band went through a line-up change, and emerged anew from the year 2012, reformed with six members that include a female chorus. From autumn of the same year, they began to work on the recording of their 2nd album. The mixing and mastering was done by Tetsuji "tetsu666" Yamada, also known for his management of such bands as UNITED, TOKYO YANKEES and others. Although pertaining to the prevalent style of their previous work, the album has turned out to be a piece transcending the category of gothic metal, taking an evolutionary step in pursuit of an experimental melancholic sound and its distinct possibilities.
Vocals: Shiori Vitus
Guitar, Keybords: Ippei J. Malmsteen
Drums, Percussion: Shark
Chorus: Jet Rumi
<A commentary of all tracks in the album by Shiori(lyrics), and Ippei(music)>
1. Time, Meditation and Dawn
<Shiori> From darkness till dawn, the shapeless skies that shift aspect.
<Ippei> I wrote this song while highly keeping in thought its position as the opening. The violins in the track were played by Yuri (taking part in tracks1,2,4,5,9), from the gothic metal band Swallow Tail.
2. A Rain Song
<Shiori> During the long spell of rain in early summer. The setting of life I was sinking into, at the period was like a whimsical sky ever uncontrollable.
<Ippei> In this track are numerous experimental factors, intended to create a composition with a vast image, independent from past works. After much trial and error to design the song so as to envelop it with an increased scope, while at the same time maintaining a melody that is melancholic, the arrangement was finished shortly before its recording.
3. Fatal Movement
<Shiori> There was a faint sense of change, small, although definite. When things begin to spin, they cannot be stopped.
<Ippei> This track bases its origin on a piece written before eleanor was formed, at a time when, while sticking to an aggressive style of metal/hardcore, I was also seeking an alternative direction. As a certain blending between the popular and metal, the track can be said to symbolize the present eleanor.
<Shiori> According to the composers offer, the lyrics associate with a procession for the deceased. Even after the material body is purified, somewhere in someone, that existence, that thought, must certainly remain.
<Ippei> The track is a confrontation, between apathy/silence, and a throbbing sense of passion. I pictured my own passing away while comprising it, and accordingly requested for the lyrics to be written in analogy with the scene in mind. As the composer, this track is personally a highlight in the album.
<Shiori> The lyrics were inspired by part of a certain novel. Two different persons, each live their lives while enduring an enigmatic curse. When fate collides they encounter.
<Ippei> This track opens with an impressive, wistful guitar melody. It has the most compact unfolding in the album, and pertains to the style of our former work a circle of lament. Additional vocals were performed by Koh from Bellfast. It was quite an occasion to hear him sing in Japanese (All lyrics in the new album were written in Japanese).
6. Blue Moon
<Shiori> The countenance of the moon is exceedingly, powerfully alluring. Always being twisted around, is so difficult to bear.
<Ippei> In this album acoustic guitars are frequently used, and this is one such track. While tinged with sadness, the somewhat pastoral melody line gives it a touch that brings folk metal to mind.
<Shiori> A beautiful dawn is, the one and only truth. In it there was all.
<Ippei> I was conscious of a doom metal style while writing this, intending to create a track that takes to a further extent its capacity for solemnity. I feel assured that this attempt was a success. This track alone was taken with dropped tuning on all guitar parts.
8. Sleeping Water
<Shiori> Impulse carried away by the current. Wavering emotions. In the unsteady flow, I found myself struggling.
<Ippei> Resoluteness to stick firmly to the style one has established is unequaled. To express within the categories of music which had an influence on oneself is, in an ultimate sense, easy. Since there are always answers found in relics of the past. In order to formulate a unique structure and reach further, courage and wits are employed.
<Shiori> Even a smile I cover up and overlay. If it amounts to the idea of perfection.
<Ippei> Ever since writing this track in 2009, it has become possible to hold an increasingly unfettered way of thought. I began originating pieces recorded on the album, without a specific theme in mind. Although aware of the “metal” blood flowing in my veins, that it is now possible to grasp an unbound method of expression, and not only pursue that blood, is undoubtedly due to influence from all members consisting the band eleanor, and their abundant musical aspects.
